STATEMENT ON AK PRESS VERSUS MICHAEL SCHMIDT CASE

The Institute for Anarchist Theory and History (IATH) – a multinational research project currently based in the Global South (Brazil and South Africa) – heard the shocking AK Press accusation (Sept. 25th, 2015) that Michael Schmidt, one of our members, is supposedly an “undercover fascist”. AK Press states that they have “received and compiled” what they “consider to be incontrovertible evidence that Michael Schmidt is a white nationalist trying to infiltrate the anarchist movement”.
This statement was made without presenting any supporting evidence. It is only stated that a person called Alexander Reid Ross “will soon be publishing an article that presents all the details in a more comprehensive manner”.[1]
The allegations came as enormous and terrible surprise. We would like in this statement to point out some of the measures we have already taken to deal with this matter, and to note some concerns regarding the manner in which the matter is being handled by AK Press.
Michael Schmidt is, at this moment, on a leave of absence from the IATH to allow him, and the IATH, to deal adequately with the matter. He will be on leave to prepare his defense, and will remain so until the IATH Council has taken a final position.
We will only make our final statement on the matter after carefully analyzing the AK Press evidence (not presented yet) and Michael Schmidt’s responses.
We cannot proceed further without criticizing the way in which AK Press has acted. AK Press has already tried, condemned and sentenced Michael Schmidt (in a “juridical” sense). They alone received and compiled the evidence, interpreted it, reached judgment and sentenced Michael Schmidt by cancelling his upcoming book, and by putting out of print two previous books in which he was involved.
All this was done without presenting evidence to the public, and without allowing him the right to defend himself.[2] We think that these measures – which are guaranteed in the most basic of the “democratic” states that we so regularly criticize – must surely be guaranteed in any model of libertarian “justice.”
The result should have been foreseen. Hundreds of people have shared AK Press Facebook’s sentencing, and individuals and organizations have reproduced it. Michael Schmidt has been publicly condemned, with no evidence presented, and no opportunity to defend himself.
We are not here, to defend one side, or the other. We believe that we will only be able to do so once all the evidence has been presented by AK Press and by Michael Schmidt in his responses.
But we would like to appeal to people in the “libertarian milieu” to proceed in the same way, taking into account the basic ethics that we believe anyone, who claims to be an anarchist, should uphold.
To minimize the damage, we insist that AK Press immediately make public the evidence it used so that we, and others, can analyze the case and take a definite, well informed and evidence-based position.

O Instituto de Teoria e História Anarquista (ITHA) – um projeto de pesquisa internacional atualmente baseado no sul global (Brasil e África do Sul) – recebeu a chocante acusação feita pela AK Press, em 25 de setembro de 2015, de que Michael Schmidt, um de nossos membros, é supostamente um “fascista disfarçado”. A AK Press sustenta que “recebeu e compilou” o que eles “consideram ser uma prova indiscutível de que Michael Schmidt é um nacionalista branco tentando se infiltrar no movimento anarquista”.
Essa declaração foi feita sem a apresentação de qualquer prova. Foi somente declarado que uma pessoa chamada Alexander Reid Ross “irá em breve publicar um artigo que apresenta todos os detalhes de modo mais compreensivo”.[1]
As alegações foram para nós uma enorme e terrível surpresa. Gostaríamos, nesta declaração, de apontar algumas das medidas que já tomamos para lidar com o caso e também colocar algumas preocupações em relação à maneira que a questão está sendo tratada pela AK Press.
Michael Schmidt está, neste momento, afastado do ITHA para que ele e o ITHA possam lidar adequadamente com a questão. Ele permanecerá afastado para preparar sua defesa e continuará assim até que o Conselho do ITHA tenha tomado uma posição final.
Nós só faremos nossa declaração final sobre o caso depois de analisar cuidadosamente as provas da AK Press (que ainda não foram apresentadas) e as respostas de Michael Schmidt.
Não podemos continuar sem criticar a maneira como a AK Press procedeu. A AK Press julgou, condenou e sentenciou Michael Schmidt (no sentido “jurídico”). Seus membros, somente entre si, receberam e compilaram as provas, as interpretaram, as julgaram e sentenciaram Michael Schmidt, cancelando seu futuro livro e tirando de catálogo dois livros anteriores nos quais ele estava envolvido.
Tudo isso foi feito sem a apresentação das provas ao público e sem ter permitido a ele o direito de defesa.[2] Pensamos que essas medidas – que estão garantidas nos mais básicos dos Estados “democráticos”, que nós tão frequentemente criticamos – devem certamente ser garantidas em qualquer modelo de “justiça” libertária”.
O resultado disso deveria ter sido previsto. Centenas de pessoas compartilharam a sentença da AK Press via Facebook, indivíduos e organizações a reproduziram. Michael Schmidt foi publicamente condenado sem provas publicamente apresentada e sem a oportunidade de se defender.
Não estamos aqui defendendo um ou outro lado. Pensamos que só teremos condições de fazer isso quando as provas forem apresentadas pela AK Press e quando Michael Schmidt tiver respondido a todas as questões envolvidas.
Gostaríamos de pedir às pessoas do “meio libertário” que procedam desta mesma forma, levando em conta a ética fundamental que pensamos que qualquer um que se considere anarquista deve ter.
Tentando minimizar os danos, insistimos que a AK Press torne imediatamente públicas as provas utilizadas, de modo que nós e outros possamos analisar o caso e ter uma posição definitiva, informada e baseada nas provas e na defesa.
