Anarchism and the Russian and Ukrainian Revolutions

INTRODUCTION

Taking advantage of the 100th anniversary of the 1917 Russian Revolution, which takes place this year, the Institute for Anarchist Theory and History (IATH-ITHA) will, throughout the course of the year, be organizing a “100 Years of the Russian Revolution Dossier: Anarchism and the Russian and Ukrainian revolutions”. With it we intend to contribute to making the history of anarchism, and the libertarians’ theoretical perspectives, more properly known.

As the name of the dossier itself says, it aims to present a compilation of material that discusses the thought and action of the anarchists during the process of the Russian Revolution and the Ukrainian Revolution – the latter of which we do not consider simply an unfolding of the former. It also intends to publish studies that address the unfolding of these revolutions in different parts of the world, among them Brazil. For the production of this dossier, IATH-ITHA is relying on contributors involved in digitization, publication, translation and the writing of texts on the subject in question.

Materials will be compiled in four languages (Portuguese, Spanish, English and French), which will be divided into three different categories:

  1. Articles in academic format, unpublished or not;
  2. Studies of various kinds, produced by academics and militants;
  3. Interventions and analyses of anarchist militancy during and after the revolutionary process.

CALL FOR AUTHORS

»Scope and focus

Although the IATH-ITHA dossier intends to compile texts in all three of these categories, the call for authors refers only to the first, that is, “Articles in academic format, unpublished or not”.

The proposal is that priority be given to the contributions of anarchist or libertarian organizations, groups and individuals to the revolutionary process in question. However, understanding that this is not a watertight process, both historically and geographically, articles that discuss precedents such as the revolutions of 1905 or February 1917, or even that extrapolate to Russia and extend to countries like Ukraine and others will be accepted. Articles that discuss revolutionary developments in different parts of the world, including Brazil, will also be accepted. It should be emphasized that the intention, in this dossier, is not to reproduce the orthodox – and, often, completely ideologized  and devoid of any scientific seriousness – readings that have been and still are carried out on the Russian Revolution and its unfolding. In this sense, the “IATH-ITHA Publication Criteria” (in Portuguese) should be strictly adhered to.

In a non-exhaustive list of topics that can be approached from this approach, one has:

  • Process of the constitution of Russian and Ukrainian anarchism (relations with insurrectionism, syndicalism, etc.)
  • Conception and formation of soviets
  • Revolution of 1905
  • Revolution of February 1917
  • Revolution of October 1917
  • Revolution in Ukraine (especially until 1921)
  • Kronstadt Uprising
  • Similarities and differences between the revolutionary processes in Russia and Ukraine
  • Makhnovitchina and other organizational initiatives
  • Political biographies of anarchists who contributed to the process
  • Relations with Bolsheviks and repression
  • Impacts of the process in Brazil (and other countries)

»Deadlines and submission process

Articles may be submitted to ITHA-IATH throughout 2017 in a continuous stream. The submission deadline is December 20th.

The submission process is as follows:

  1. Articles must be sent by email to IATH-ITHA (ithanarquista@gmail.com).
  2. The subject of the email must be “Russian Revolution Dossier”.
  3. The article is submitted on receipt of the email and goes through the evaluation process.

»Criteria and evaluation

The key criteria for publication in the Dossier are: the quality of the texts and consistency with the focus and scope previously proposed.

Articles do not have to be unpublished. They should, in general, adequately substantiate their arguments and theses, making their factual bases clear, be they of a historical and/or theoretical order, based on anarchist authors and/or episodes.

No works based on common sense and readings carried out ideologically and without methodological rigor will be published. The technical standards for publication must be obeyed.

All articles will be submitted to the editorial committee of the Dossier, which will analyze them and decide on their publication or not; eventually, it will ask the authors to make necessary adjustments to the content and/or form. Authors will be informed of the decisions and evaluation.

»Technical standards for publication

Articles must be between 10 and 30 pages long and must comply with the IATH-ITHA standards found in this document (in Portuguese).
